Course Overview

This AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) course is an entry-level accounting qualification, ideal for anyone who is seeking an introduction to basic accounting principles and skills.

What will I learn?
This qualification will prepare you for junior and entry level accounting roles. It delivers a solid foundation in finance administration – covering areas such as double entry bookkeeping to basic costing principles and using accounting software.

On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded an AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting. This internationally recognised AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification enables those working in accounting or those who looking to pursue accountancy as a career to gain knowledge, practical experience and the all-important certification often sought by employers.

Units of Study:

The Level 2 course covers a range of key areas, including:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping
  • Principles of Bookkeeping
  • Principles of Costing
  • The Business Environment

You will also develop business communications and lifelong learning skills, applying what you learn on the course to the wider industry context.

Assessment Methods

You will benefit from weekly classes, led by your course tutor and using core texts that are provided within the fee. Regular discussion with classmates and participation in class activities will help to reinforce key points while also providing the additional support and motivation that comes from being part of a group. AAT Assessments against the standards of competence takes place through either a computer-based test, marked online by the computer, or computer-based assessment, marked externally. The exams are set and marked by AAT as the Awarding Body of the qualification. All computer-based exams will take place following the delivery of each unit of study and are scheduled normally on a Friday. Sittings are usually scheduled 9.30am – 12 noon and 1pm – 3pm. The exam timetable will be provided upon commencement of the course and attendance to scheduled exam sittings is a mandatory requirement.

Progression Options

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to higher levels of the AAT Accounting Qualifications (Level 3 and then on to Level 4). Under the National Skills Fund initiative, you might be eligible for a fully funded Level 3 course. Alternatively, you can apply for an advanced learner loan to cover the cost of your Level 3 study. Please ask a member of college staff for more information. Alternatively, The skills and knowledge you will gain throughout this qualification will qualify you for roles including Accounts Assistant, Finance Assistant, Credit Control Assistant or Purchase Ledger Clerk.

Entry Requirements

AAT does not set any entry requirements for this qualification. However, for the best chance of success, it is recommended that students begin their studies with a good standard of English and maths. Previous knowledge of accounting or a Level 1 Bookkeeping qualification would be advantageous but not essential.

Prior to being invited to interview you will be asked to complete the AAT Skills check which will identify the correct entry point for you to commence your AAT studies.

Attendance Requirements One afternoon per week, however students will also be expected to complete 4-5 hours per week self-study in their own time. Weekly attendance to on campus sessions is mandatory to ensure you have the best chance of success.
