Course Overview

This qualification is designed to reflect the activities and responsibilities of candidates who are advice and guidance practitioners working directly with clients. Candidates will be disseminating information to clients, advising them and providing some degree of guidance.

The NVQ is related directly to the learner’s job role and helps to reflect on their performance at work and review their working practices. It provides a personal development opportunity and enhances efficiency within an organisation.

Candidates must achieve a minimum of 21 credits. Completion of the mandatory units will provide 12 credits. The remainder will be achieved by completing a selection of optional units (depending on credit value and rules of combination). The assessor will provide guidance on the selection of appropriate units.

Mandatory units:

  • Establish communication with clients for advice and guidance
  • Support clients to make use of the advice and guidance service
  • Review own contribution to the service
  • Understand the importance of legislation and procedures

Optional units:

The optional units cover a wide variety of roles within advice and guidance including:

  • Develop interactions with advice and guidance clients
  • Interact with clients using a range of media, assist advice and guidance clients to decide on a course of action
  • Assist clients through advice and guidance to review their achievement of a course of action
  • Negotiate on behalf of advice and guidance clients
  • Liaise with other services
  • Enable advice and guidance clients to access referral opportunities
  • Manage personal caseload
  • Operate within networks
  • Provide and maintain information materials for use within the service

The assessor will help to identify the most appropriate units for the learner’s individual role.

Assessment Methods

There is no requirement to attend College. The assessor will assess in the workplace, provide an induction onto the online portfolio and through subsequent contact, will carry out observations at work, obtain testimonies from colleagues and carry out professional discussions, set knowledge questions and use appropriate work product.

Progression Options

There are progression opportunities onto the Level 4 Diploma in Advice and Guidance (depending on job role).

Entry Requirements

All candidates must be working as an advice and guidance practitioner. Prior to enrolment an assessor will arrange to meet the learner and discuss their job role to ensure that it will afford sufficient scope to provide all of the evidence required.
