Course Overview

This course is ideal if you are working in a veterinary practice and wish to have a recognised qualification. You will be in College for up to one and a half days a week, and ideally work the rest of the week in a veterinary practice.Over the length of the course you need to gather 600 hours of practical work experience which you will be off signed by your supervisor in the work place.

  • Veterinary nursing skills
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Nursing support skills
  • Canine and feline husbandry, and management
  • Exotic husbandry and management
  • Health and hygiene
  • First aid
  • Reception skills
  • Finance and administration

Assessment Methods

Assessment is through creating a portfolio of assessments and case studies both at College and your workplace.

Progression Options

Having successfully completed this course you could progress to the Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse providing you have the appropriate entry requirements. You may choose to continue to work within a veterinary practice using the knowledge and qualification you have gained.

Entry Requirements

To start the course you need employment or a voluntary placement in a
veterinary practice. This does not have to be an RCVS registered Training
Practice (TP).


Recent school leavers need to have attained GCSE English and maths
in the 9 to 4 range or attend English and/or maths GCSE on a separate half
day in order for you to successfully achieve your programme.


You will have an interview and initial assessment in English and maths
in order to determine your appropriate level of study.
