Course Overview

You need to be employed to start an Apprenticeship. Please visit our vacancy page or if you have an employer, please ensure you add full contact details of your employer within your application. If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Please apply for a full-time course as your second option.

This course is ideal for you if you are passionate about furniture making or fine woodworking and would like to earn while you learn. This is the course for you if you like working with timber and creating timber-based projects with a hands-on approach.

The qualification is split into individual units that you will need to complete and functional skills in English and Maths. You will develop your techniques of making quality furniture. Topics studied include:

  • Develop understanding, care of and use of power tools
  • Learn techniques for working efficiently and professionally within the workshop environment

Underpinning knowledge is assessed via internally set assignments and an end of course exams for both practical and underpinning knowledge. You will also be assessed by practical observation, a portfolio of work, periodic reviews in both College and the workplace, practical skills assessment and an underpinning knowledge final assessment.

Functional Skills are assessed by a portfolio of evidence and external multiple choice examination.

Spotlight

An apprenticeship has been the best option for me since I benefit from working in the industry as well as gaining a qualification. College days give me time to work on my assignments and explore features in the software I haven’t covered at work. During the rest of the week, I develop client relationships which help build my confidence and improve my ability to express ideas.
