Intermediate Dressmaking - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

The course will focus on some more advanced sewing and dressmaking techniques to enable you to attempt more intricate garment construction using a greater range of fabrics.

The course will include:

  • Developing your use of commercial patterns and adapting those patterns to ensure perfect fit
  • Pattern drafting skills from existing garments
  • Working with a greater range of fabrics

Who the course is for?

This course is designed for people who have some experience in garment construction and have perhaps attended our basic sewing course and wish to further their skills in a relaxed environment.

What makes this course special?

Participants will be learning in a relaxed atmosphere and have access to facilities that will enable them to increase skills and enjoyment in making their own clothes. The course is flexible to respond to the needs and wishes of the group and will focus on specific skills acquisition when required.

What is involved?

The course will be broken down into a series of (clothes making) projects that will help develop your skills and confidence to become increasingly technical in nature. There will be choices in what you make and the course will, in part, respond to learner interests. You will learn how to properly measure yourself in order to adapt a pattern to fit perfectly.

Additional costs

The course cost includes the calico and threads you will need in order to practice skills before embarking on your own garments. Learners will need to provide patterns and enough fabric and finishings (poppers, buttons, zips, piping etc) to complete a variety of projects during the term. You will be given advice on the suitability of projects you undertake and the materials required to finish your project to a high standard. You will need to bring a sharp pair of material scissors and pins each week.

Assessment Methods

You will be given full instructions and feedback to help you grasp and then master each new technique and fabric.

Progression Options

There are an exciting range of subsidised sewing short courses offered in both Bridgwater and Taunton Campuses over the year.

Spotlight

An apprenticeship has been the best option for me since I benefit from working in the industry as well as gaining a qualification. College days give me time to work on my assignments and explore features in the software I haven’t covered at work. During the rest of the week, I develop client relationships which help build my confidence and improve my ability to express ideas.
