Portraiture Painting - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

Who the course is for?

This course is a taster for those that are keen to start or continue to paint using oils and looking for an opportunity to paint weekly. Sessions are planned each week to help artists develop confidence and conviction in their own style and provide opportunities to practice very specific skills when painting the human face.

What makes this course special?

This is a new course following some learner feedback and we hope to be able to run it regularly alongside a more general painting course. The course will provide a space where learners are able to stretch and challenge themselves and explore their own style in a supportive, creative and hugely enjoyable environment.

What is involved?

This course will help you to improve your oil painting techniques. The focus will look at the different spacings that complete the structure of a face and how the spacing changes with expression.

The course will start with the basic skin tones and will then move to exploring different lighting on the face created by the time of day, year and general surroundings and how clothing can influence the colours that we see in our skin and hair.

Additional Costs

There are noadditional costs for the course unless you are new to the group in which case we ask for £6.60 for a set of good paint brushes to ensure ‘the right tools for the job’. Some learners bring in their own materials but they are provided.

Assessment Methods

You will be given support and feedback for each task and there is time at the end of each session to collectively review the work of the group.

Progression Options

We offer a range of evening, afternoon and day long drawing and painting courses across both Bridgwater and Taunton campuses as well as accredited full-time options (Access and Degree).

An apprenticeship has been the best option for me since I benefit from working in the industry as well as gaining a qualification. College days give me time to work on my assignments and explore features in the software I haven’t covered at work. During the rest of the week, I develop client relationships which help build my confidence and improve my ability to express ideas.
