The Art of Visual Storytelling - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

This course is open to those who are looking to explore their own limitless, imaginative creativity through the medium of picture book illustration. If you’ve ever thought about illustrating your own book, but don’t know where to start, this course will give you the skills to conjure up an idea and bring it alive. You will explore how text and image can work together to create a captivating narrative, using mediums such as inks, goauche, graphite and collage. This course is suitable for accomplished drawers and beginners alike.

This is a new leisure course to us and one we hope will provide the opportunity to work with an independent artist, to create illustrations for a picture book, whether that be for children, adults or both!

The course will explore different themes, including story boarding, the development of a central character, and the creation of a world for the character to inhabit.

We will provide a sketch book for the course for you to work on during the course and to develop your visual ideas outside of sessions.

Spotlight

An apprenticeship has been the best option for me since I benefit from working in the industry as well as gaining a qualification. College days give me time to work on my assignments and explore features in the software I haven’t covered at work. During the rest of the week, I develop client relationships which help build my confidence and improve my ability to express ideas.
