Course Overview

Learning Outcomes:

  • Be able to manage a project in an organisation
  • Be able to evaluate own ability to manage a project

The ‘Managing Projects in the Organisation’ module will cover the knowledge required to understand the most appropriate approaches, tools and techniques available in managing projects.

Following the full-day workshop, learners will return to the workplace to plan, communicate and implementa project and finally monitor and evaluate the results.

The course will consist of one-full day workshop with the remainder of the course studied through self-directed learning assessments.

  • Project sponsors, stakeholders and scope
  • Work breakdown and product breakdown structure
  • Gantt and bar charts, critical path analysis
  • Methods of reducing projects times and costs
  • Resource analysis, and re-scheduling
  • Methods to monitor and evaluate project progress and final outcomes, including finance
  • Project communication methods
  • Links to change management
  • Information technology solutions
  • Benefits of project managment
  • Key project management terminology
  • Characteristics of project managers
  • Organisational structures to support managers
  • Types of project; the project life cycle, PRINCE2
  • Feasibility studies; risk management techniques
  • Project team roles; critical relationships
  • Procedures for project closure

About the ESF Hidden Talent Project:

The ILM Level 5 Manging Projects in the Organisation unit is part of ‘Hidden Talent’, a region-wide project supported by the European Social Fund. It is fully-funded subject to meeting the eligibility criteria with the overall aim to provide opportunities for individuals to unlock unrealised potential through improving access to higher education.

To qualify as fully-funded, candidates need to:



  • Aged 19+

  • Live in Somerset

  • Be eligible to work in United Kingdom

  • Be able to present a valid EU passport or birth certificate, or other
    evidence to right to live and work in the UK.

  • Be able to justify the added benefit of undertaking the unit if they
    already hold a degree
