Introduction to the Facilities Industry Distance Learning Level 1 - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

The aim of this qualification is to provide learners with a broad knowledge and understanding about the facilities and service industry.

The duration of this course is 16-20 weeks. Guided learning hours are 8-10 hours per week dependent upon knowledge of the subject.

To meet the assessment criteria (section 3.1-3.4) for unit 1, students must be observed working safely using chemicals, lifting and handling, and using electrical and non-electrical equipment by someone occupationally competent and qualified to at least Level 1 and/or have current experience of working in the Facilities Industry at this level.

Unit 1 – Health, Safety and Security in the Facilities Industry

  • Section 1 Know relevant health and safety legislation for working in the facilities industry
  • Section 2 Know how to work safely in the facilities industry
  • Section 3 Be able to work safely in the facilities industry
  • Section 4 Know how to maintain safety and security in the facilities industry

Unit 2 – Workplace Hygiene in the Facilities Industry

  • Section 1 Know why it is important to keep clean and hygienic in the workplace
  • Section 2 Know the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) within the facilities industry
  • Section 3 Know how to prevent and control contamination and cross-infection within the facilities industry

Unit 3 – Introduction to Working in the Facilities Industry

  • Section 1 Know about employment in the facilities industry
  • Section 2 Know how to work as part of a team

Unit 4 – Customer Service within the Facilities Industry

  • Section 1 Know the benefits of good customer service
  • Section 2 Know how to communicate with customers in the facilities industry

Assessment Methods

Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning.

A certificate will be awareded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studies.

Eligibility for FREE Level 2 Distance Learning courses:



  • Learners must be aged 19 years or over as at 31/08/19

  • Must have lived in the EU for the last three years

  • Must currently reside in England, in a post code outside of
    Greater Manchester, Liverpool City, Cambridge & Peterborough, Tees Valley
    and the West Midlands.

  • Must have a full Level 2 qualification or above in any subject (i.e QCF
    Diploma Level 2, five GCSEs/O Levels grade A-C, two or three AS Levels, CSE
    grade 1 5 or more, one A Level, QCF Certificate, GNVQ Intermediate, First
    Diploma, NVQ Level 2, First Certificate or Principle of Learning Level
    2).

  • Unemployed and claiming benefits, and using the qualification to obtain
    work.
