Build a Website Using Wordpress Introduction - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

This course is for those who have not created a website or blog before, but wish to gain experience and confidence in developing a basic promotional website, or blog, from scratch.

Each session is run as a combination of taught time and workshop. You will develop your own five-page website and blog suitable for a small business owner, community groups or individuals looking to start an online presence.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to build, design and maintain a small promotional website under the expert guidance and support of a knowledgeable tutor.

You may want to come with access to your own photographs and text to upload onto pages or to save your work to share with colleagues as the website develops, either through an online file manager or USB stick.

Over the five weeks you will study the practicalities of building a website from scratch. We will use a free hosting site during the course, and you will learn:

  • Selecting themes, or styles, for your website.
  • How to create an overall website structure.
  • The difference between a ‘website’ and a ‘blog’
  • Develop pages with a suitable balance of text and images
  • The basics of domains and hosting, ready for you to take your website further should you wish to after the course.
  • Basic discussion about how to use this site with other social media to promote your project.
  • Using some of the features on webpages and blogs to make It even more useful to your visitors. This may include plugins, widgets or similar.
  • html/css, sql and php will not be specifically covered.

Assessment Methods

You will be shown how to do each task carefully, and given time to undertake everything yourself and make notes to help you remember key actions.

I chose to study at BTC because of the excellent computing and IT facilities and, of the local colleges in the area, it seemed able to provide the best experience. My confidence has definitely developed during my time at the College. Interacting with new people and in a new environment has helped me come out of my comfort zone and progress personally.
