Apprentices will train to provide first line cyber security support, this includes monitoring and detecting potential security threats.

A Cyber Security Technician supports the security of an organisation’s IT infrastructure including its devices and network, mainly working under supervision. In summary, in addition to key workplace skills, the role may involve:

  • Conducting specific cyber security tasks to defined procedures and standards.
  • Implementing cyber security mechanisms, maintaining, and installing controls and engaging with specific cyber security events as directed.
  • Supporting an effective security culture within the business, maintaining records compliance and access rights.
  • Identifying and responding to complex issues and determining the need for escalation.
  • Contributing to risk and vulnerability assessment programmes and incident reporting.

Units of study/what is involved

  • Apply procedures and controls to maintain security and control of an organisation.
  • Contribute to the production and development of security culture across an organisation including assisting with the promotion of cyber security awareness programmes.
  • Process cyber security helpdesk requests ensuring confidentiality, integrity and availability of digital information, meeting relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct the installation and maintenance of technical security controls in accordance with relevant procedures and standards.
  • Monitor, identify, report and escalate information security incidents and events in accordance with relevant procedures and standards
  • Administer cryptographic and certificate management activities in accordance with relevant procedures and standards.
  • Conduct regular review of access rights to digital information assets in accordance with relevant procedures and standards.

I chose to study at BTC because of the excellent computing and IT facilities and, of the local colleges in the area, it seemed able to provide the best experience.
