The course will meet the needs of those working in a professional or technical career in construction. Students are typically working as consultants or developers, housing enabling officers, planning or validation officers for a local authority or for housing associations.
The course not only serves those working in full time employment within the industry, it is also a proven progression route to Higher Education and the first steps to RTPI chartership.
A mix of theory and practice relating to the built environment, this course includes site visits and guest lectures. Most of the delivery is in the classroom and learners will develop the skills required to progress within their employment or onto Higher Education.
The Apprenticeship framework will consist of the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Town Planning and the ABBE NVQ Diploma in Town Planning for Technicians.
The BTEC element is covered within a day-release College programme, whilst the NVQ is competency based and linked to the workplace.

The course is assessed through a series of internally set assignments involving a combination of scenario based tasks linked to project work, practical exercises, individual study and presentations. Assessment methods are designed to develop industry relevant skills and increase the employability skills of the students. The work uses local case studies to explore a range of issues relevant to the planning sector and to allow the students to develop a deeper understanding of the issues involved.
This course provides a good understanding of the planning and construction sector and students can progress to degree programmes in urban and rural planning at local universities. We have a close links to UWE and a clear progression route onto the courses that they run. Learners will also be eligible for student membership of the RTPI and gain access to their career development resources.

At least 5 GCSEs grades A* – C or 9 – 4 including English and Mathematics, or a Merit profile in a relevant Level 2 qualification.
