Forest School Leaders Advanced Award - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

For those interested in setting up and running a Forest School, or delivering Forest School sessions, where learners will work with children, young adults or others in an outdoor environment.

We also offer this course as an intensive training option over five days, plus two further skills days in the outdoors. The outreach training course is for a minimum of 10 people, leading to the BTEC Level 3 Advanced Award in Forest School Leadership.

After completing the above training days with the Forest School team, learners will be required to complete further compulsory aspects of the course. These aspects are planning and implementing Forest School sessions for a group of children or young people, completing and evaluate log of sessions, writing a report based on findings, being practically assessed and creating a staff handbook. Learners will be given completion dates for each of these tasks. The total time commitment an average student is 9 – 12 months from the onset of training with us.

Candidates will learn to:

  • Plan appropriate outdoor activities and experiences aimed to promote participants’ learning and development
  • Plan these activities within the constraints of the setting, safety and the needs of participants, carers and staff
  • Use the resources and how to set and use evaluation criteria including monitoring, observing and recording
  • Teach six sessions of 1.5 hours each with a chosen client group, keeping a logbook of activities and development.

Additionaly, practical skills including listening, movement, touch and sight will also be taught. Learners will be taught how to teach the safe use of tools, (pen knives/saws), including safety procedures and uses for each tool. Uses for various types of wood and conservation issues will form a part of the learning experience.

Basic construction of structures: Participants will learn to build structures using natural materials to various designs, including basic knots and lashings and recognition of natural shapes in wood to aid construction.

Types and construction of fires: Participants will be able to supervise participants building and lighting fires to cook meals on, including safety procedures, the fire triangle, fuels and tinder.

Learners will need to attend 90% of the sessions, including two skills days based outside.

Initially on the course and then by the submission of the assigned tasks.

Progression Options

Learners could set up, or work, in a Forest School, or deliver Forest School sessions in a work setting with children or young adults. This course would also be valuable in delivering Forest School sessions to people of all ages and abilities.

Entry Requirements

To achieve this course candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  • To be over 18 years old
  • Working with children with a Level 3 childcare/play work qualification and/or experience of working with young people is essential
  • If working with learners with learning difficulties and disabilities, have a relevant qualification and experience of these groups
  • Need to access the relevant client group in order to complete some assignments
  • To attend 90% of the lessons
  • To attend two skills days
  • To teach six sessions with a chosen client group, keeping a log book of activities and development
  • To self-assess these sessions and document with photo / video evidence
  • To complete all assignment work
  • Provide proof of a relevant first aid certificate which has to be at least a two day qualification
