Introduction to Forest School - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

Participants will learn to plan appropriate activities and experiences aimed to promote self-esteem, learning and development. Learners will learn to plan these activities within the constraints of the setting, taking into account the safety issues and the needs of peers, children, carers and staff.

Additionaly, practical skills including listening, movement, touch and sight will also be taught. These will include the safe use of tools, basic construction of structures, basic knots and lashings, types and construction of fires and conservation issues.

This course is for those interested in running Forest School activities in a home, playground, garden or school field with children aged three – 10 years, this course is the ideal starting point.

Assessment Methods

Initially on the course and then by the submission of the assigned tasks.

Progression Options

BTEC Advanced award for Forest School Leaders, need to be working towards or holding a relevant Level 3 qualification.

  • A good sense of humour
  • Suitable outdoor clothing including stout footwear. Bringing a camera will enable learners to record their experience visually – photographs can enhance coursework

To achieve this course learners will need to meet the following:

  • Attend the two day course
  • Be over 16 years old
  • Enjoy working with a chosen client group
  • Keep a logbook of activities and development during the length of the course
  • Be assessed practically
  • Complete all assignment work
