Course Overview

The City & Guilds Advanced Engineering is a part-time, two year, one day a week course designed to meet the needs of those looking to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in Advanced Manufacturing / Production Engineering at a higher level. The units have been specially chosen to provide practical skills and theoretical knowledge required in the demanding engineering business environment. On successful completion you will be awarded a Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

Ideal for both those with experience and those with little experience, this course provides you with a nationally recognised qualification and the skills to progress within the hi-tech manufacturing and production industries.

As far as possible, the course is practical and you will be studying modules in a variety of areas. These will lead you to gaining experience skills and knowledge in the following modules, andadd value to business operations:

  • Engineering planning and scheduling
  • Principles of mechanical component manufacture
  • Materials engineering
  • Quality assurance and control
  • Developing business improvement plans
  • Human factors in the workplace
  • Statistical analysis for Engineers
  • Engineering design
  • Work based project

You will learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, directed study, assignment work, practical exercises and a major project normally relevant to your employment and devised in conjunction with your employer.

There may be additional fees associated with this course in relation to uniform, residentials, books etc.

Assessment Methods

You will be continuously assessed, in the following forms:

  • Assignments – the vast majority of assessment will be in this form and may include laboratory work, investigations, projects, practical exercises and integrative assignments that link various subject areas
  • Time constrained assignments covering short blocks of work

Progression Options

This qualification will enable you to progress into employment or advance your existing career opportunities and lead to the following qualifications:

  • ILM Level 4 or Level 5 Qualifications in Management
  • City & Guilds Professional Recognition Awards.
  • Foundation Degree or other Higher Education qualifications

These qualifications may also provide preparation towards professional registration as an Engineering Technician and progression to Incorporated Engineer registration.

Entry Requirements

Typically, you will require a Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in a numerate or
engineering discipline or equivalent qualifications. Applicants will normally
also require at least four GCSE passes (at grade C or above), including
maths and English or their Level 2 equivalents.


For mature applicants we will accept a wide range of non-standard and
professional qualifications and experience, but if you are unsure as to whether
you qualify we encourage you to contact us. Whilst we can be flexible with
regard to formal qualifications, all applicants will be required to demonstrate
motivation and commitment. You may also be asked to attend an interview of which
you must be successful.
