This course will focus on some advanced sewing and dressmaking techniques, aiming for you to complete finished garments. Techniques being explored include developing use of commercial patterns and adapting those to fit perfectly and moving to pattern drafting skills in more detail. You will also work with a greater range of fabrics including sheer, lace and chiffons.
This course is designed for people who have experience in garment construction and have perhaps attended our Dressmaking course and wish to further their skills in a relaxed environment.
Participants will be learning in a relaxed atmosphere and have access to facilities that will enable them to increase skills and enjoyment in making their own clothes. The course is flexible to respond to the needs and wishes of the group and will focus on specific skills acquisition when required.
The course will be broken down into a series of (clothes making) projects that will help develop your skills and confidence and over the first and second term become increasingly technical in nature. There will be choices in what you make and the course will, in part, respond to learner interests. You will learn how to properly measure yourself in order to adapt a pattern to fit perfectly.
The course cost includes the calico you will need in order to practise skills before embarking on your own garments. Learners will need to provide patterns and enough fabric and finishings (poppers, buttons, zips, piping etc.) to complete a variety of projects during the 30 week course. You will be given advice on the suitability of projects to undertake and the materials required to finish your project to a high standard. You will need to bring a sharp pair of material scissors and pins each week.
You will be given full instructions and feedback to help you grasp and then master each new technique and fabric.
There are an exciting range of subsidised sewing short courses offered in both Bridgwater and Taunton campuses over the year.

Studying Fashion Business and Retail at Bridgwater and Taunton College was the best choice I could have made. The staff team are probably the most helpful and fun to learn with teachers I’ve ever had and have really shared their love for the subject and industry with me. Next year I am going onto the Art and Design Foundation Diploma to help build my portfolio whilst I continue to work on developing my own clothing brand.
