This is a course for beginners and those more experienced, looking to extend the range of projects they are confident to tackle on a sewing machine. Learners will need to know how to thread a machine and complete basic stitches and some very simple sewing techniques.
This course is ideal for those with an interest in making their own clothes or accessories. You will have use of the Colleges sewing machines and sewing facilities and be working alongside a professional dressmaker with others in a relaxed environment.
Learners will practise a range of basic sewing techniques before starting out on making garments. You will be taught how to measure yourself to ensure garments made fit you perfectly. There will be choice about what you make and advice on suitability will be given. The course will include learning and then mastering specific techniques as well as working more independently on individual projects (under expert guidance). If you own a sewing machine you are very welcome to bring it with you.
The course cost includes the calico you will need in order to practise skills before embarking on your own projects. For individual projects learners will need to provide their own patterns, fabric and finishings. You will also need to bring a sharp pair of fabric scissors and pins each week.
There will be full instruction on how to complete each task and support given to help you quickly progress.
There are a planned series of termly short courses that will develop skills and techniques and tackle garment construction at a pace suitable to the group and reflective of their interests.

Studying Fashion Business and Retail at Bridgwater and Taunton College was the best choice I could have made. The staff team are probably the most helpful and fun to learn with teachers I’ve ever had and have really shared their love for the subject and industry with me. Next year I am going onto the Art and Design Foundation Diploma to help build my portfolio whilst I continue to work on developing my own clothing brand.
