Course Overview

The Level 2 Diploma in Care is a competence based qualification which has been developed with Skills for Care, Skills for Health and in consultation with employers who provide adult care and health services.

This qualification consists of mandatory units covering core knowledge and skills competencies with optional specialisms which can be are combined in flexible ways to reflect the real working context of different learners. The optional units are designed to meet the requirements of a range of healthcare and care services and to support the delivery of both the Adult Care Worker and Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship Standards. To achieve the level 2 Diploma in Care Learners must achieve a minimum of 46 credits. 24 credits must come from the mandatory units in group A. The remaining 22 credits can come from groups B and C with a maximum of 8 credits from group C.

The Level 2 Diploma in Care is an occupational qualification for learners who work in Health and Care Settings in England. The qualification provides the knowledge and skills for workers who have roles with responsibilities for delivery of care and support such as; adult care workers, healthcare assistant/support workers and personal assistants. The qualification is approved by Skills for Care.

This competency-based qualification is designed to be assessed in the workplace as you undertake your normal work role. The evidence must at all times reflect the policies and procedures of your work place as informed by current legislation, the relevant codes of conduct and service standards for the sector.

Assessment Methods

Level 2 Diploma in Care is a competence-based qualification which is assessed by a portfolio of evidence. You we be measured against learning outcomes and assessment criteria described in each unit of the qualification. You must meet all the learning outcomes within the chosen units and meet the rules of combination to be able to be awarded the qualification. The majority of assessment will be work-based, using real experiences, written assessments and observations by a qualified assessor.

  • Direct observation
  • Oral questioning
  • Case studies
  • Assignments and projects

Progression Options

It is anticipated that learners will progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England (QCF), or to specialist qualifications reflecting the context in which they work.

Attendance Requirements The programme is flexible Total Qualification Time (TQT) is 460 hrs which is the total amount of time, in hours, expected to be spent to achieve a qualification. It includes both guided learning hours and hours spent in preparation, study and assessment. Recommended time for completion is 12-15 months.  Flexible start dates to suit as attendance at college is not required as the qualification is delivered in the workplace. There is an expectation of self-guided independent study with current awarding body guidance being 5 -7 hours per week.

The staff have been very supportive they will do anything to help whether it be staying late or putting in 100% to make the lessons more suited to you. The staff have backgrounds in the specific course in which you want to take which helps to get another person’s view on what it’s like to work in the sector and also the course covers all areas of the subject and there is nothing that isn’t covered within the syllabus and modules.
