Course Overview

The duration of the course is 16-20 weeks. Guided learning hours are 8-10 hours per week dependent upon learner’s knowledge of the subject.

This qualification is aimed at learners wishing to develop skills in Health and Social Care and may wish to go onto further study or work in this area.

Unit 1 – Individual Rights and Responsibilities

  • Section 1 Understand their individual rights

Unit 2 – Identify and Cultural Diversity

  • Section 1 Understand the meanings of the terms social diversity and inclusion
  • Section 2 Understand equality, discrimination and prejudice
  • Section 3 Understand the diversity of communities

Unit 3 – Time Management

  • Section 1 Know how he/she spends his/her time
  • Section 2 Understand time management
  • Section 3 Know how to use time management as a way of reducing stress

Unit 4 – Research Skills for Academic Study

  • Section 1 Understand how to plan research on a given topic
  • Section 2 Assess the reliability of a range of different types of information sources
  • Section 3 Know how to utilise information to inform own writing
  • Section 4 Utilise information to inform own writing

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE UNITS

Unit 1- Ethnical Issues in Health Care

  • Section 1 Understand the concept of ethics as it relates to health and social care professions
  • Section 2 Understand a number of ethical issues in health care
  • Section 3Understand the complexity of factors involved in ethnical issues

Unit 2 – Introduction to a Healthy Lifestyle

  • Section 1 Know what contributes to a healthy lifestyle
  • Section 2 Know how activities contribute to a healthy lifestyle
  • Section 3 Know what contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle
  • Section 4 Know how to develop a personal healthy lifestyle plan

Unit 3 – Introduction to Physical Disability

  • Section 1 Know the importance of a person centred approach when working with individuals with a physical disability
  • Section 2 Know the main causes of physical disability
  • Section 3 Know how the challenges of living with a physical disability can be addressed

Unit 4 – Introduction to Mental Health

  • Know the importance of a person centred approach when working with individuals with mental health problems
  • Section 2 Know the main factors that can cause mental health problems
  • Section 3 Understand the importance of effective communication with individuals who have mental health problems

Unit 5 – Principles of Safeguarding and Protection in Health and Social Care

  • Section 1 Know how to recognise signs of abuse
  • Section 2 Know how to respond to suspected or alleged abuse
  • Section 3 Understand the national and local context of safeguarding and protection from abuse
  • Section 4 Understand the ways to reduce the likelihood of abuse
  • Section 5 Know how to recognise and report unsafe practices

Unit 6 -Preparing for a Career in Health and Social Care Professions

  • Section 1 Know about the career structure and job opportunities in identified health or social care profession
  • Section 2 Know how to prepare for a career in an identified health or social care profession

Assessment Methods

Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studied.

Entry Requirements

Eligibility for FREE Level 2 Distance Learning courses:



  • Learners must be aged 19 years or over as at 31/08/19

  • Must have lived in the EU for the last three years

  • Must currently reside in England, in a post code outside of
    Greater Manchester, Liverpool City, Cambridge & Peterborough, Tees Valley
    and the West Midlands.

  • Must have a full Level 2 qualification or above in any subject (i.e QCF
    Diploma Level 2, five GCSEs/O Levels grade A-C, two or three AS Levels, CSE
    grade 1 5 or more, one A Level, QCF Certificate, GNVQ Intermediate, First
    Diploma, NVQ Level 2, First Certificate or Principle of Learning Level
    2).
