Technical Theatre Apprenticeship Level 2 - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

This Apprenticeship is a training programme for new or existing employees working within the technical theatre and live events industry. The programme operates in the workplace, where employees work alongside experienced staff to gain specific skills, whilst also receiving tuition from the College. The Apprenticeship enables an employer to fill specific skills gaps, adapt to new opportunities and technologies and train their workforce in their own way, passing on skills that have been acquired over many years.

We are working with a range of small and large businesses in areas from theatres to live events and concerts.

This course is for individuals who are keen to gain employment in the production, entertainment, cultural events management industry or currently working in the sector. It is suitable for those with various skills and a keen interest in the live events, theatre or live sound/lighting industries. You will need to enjoy working in a practical way and within a team.

Units may include:

  • Assessing risks
  • Preparing and assembling rigging and de-rigging
  • Operating sound for a live performance in the theatre
  • Planning lighting requirements for a production
  • Preparing drawings to communicate designs

A proportion of your learning will take place within College, where you will develop skills, meet as a group, understand the wider industry and improve technical knowledge and behaviours. The majority of your course will take place in industry, which will vary from employer to employer.

Most jobs combine a number of these aspects, but whichever job you choose to do, your Apprenticeship will be structured so that the training matches your job. You will work for your employer four days a week and train for one day a week either in-house or at College.

Apprentices can start this Apprenticeship at any time of year.

Assessment Methods

There are no exams, assessment is on an ongoing basis. Your tutors will obtain evidence that you can meet the required standards throughout your training. You will be appointed an Assessor who will visit you in the workplace and assess your progress. Some of these visits will provide you with evidence that you can use towards your qualification. One day a week you will work on your college coursework gaining the underpinning knowledge required. You will be assessed in English and Maths Functional Skills if required.

Progression Options

Upon completion of the course you could move into full time employment or progress on to a Level 3 Apprenticeship.
