Course Overview

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are work-related, competence based qualifications. They reflect the knowledge and ability needed to carry out a job effectively and show that a candidate is proficient in the area of work the NVQ represents.

This NVQ is particularly useful for you if you are presently working in the radiological protection sector of the nuclear industry as a supervisor. No matter what industry training you have had, the NVQ 3 Diploma is the recognised qualification in these important roles.

We have industry specialist staff with up-to-date qualifications and experience. You will be a student of the Nuclear Skills Academy for the Southwest with a specialist assessment team. Accreditation for your specialist knowledge and training is given.

Units of study:

Mandatory Units
– Implement a radiation protection policy within ionising radiation environments
– Inspect the operation of radiation protection systems within ionising radiation environments
– Implement radiation protection systems within ionising radiation environments
– Identify and quantify of radiation hazards in the workplace within ionising radiation environments
– Designate work areas to be controlled within ionising radiation environments
– Supervise radiation-related work activities within ionising radiation environments
Optional Units
– Specify dosimetry for radiation-related work activities within ionising radiation environments
– Monitor radiation doses during radiation-related work activities within ionising radiation environments
– Assign radiation-related work activities to colleagues within ionising radiation environments
– Manage information on radiation protection within ionising radiation environments
– Deliver radiation protection training programmes within ionising radiation environments
– Assess colleagues against radiation protection requirements within ionising radiation environments
– Authorise colleagues to undertake radiation-related activities within ionising radiation environments
– Respond to radiation incidents within ionising radiation environments
– Monitor radiation hazards within ionising radiation environments.

Additional costs: £2,994 per candidate + visit cost, dependant on location (up to 5) £550 per visit.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed in a number of ways including, professional discussion, observation, use of witness testaments, job knowledge questions, and prior knowledge. Your performance will be assessed in the workplace by a suitably qualified assessor.
