Course Overview

If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Pleaseapply fora full-time course as your second option.

This apprenticeship ensures you have the organisational skills, and the political and social awareness needed to succeed in this important area of the sport and active leisure industry. It is ideal if you have been a recipient of sports development services and are a leader or coach, and wish to progress into a sports development role.

The apprenticeship could include the following areas of work:

  • Work with local communities to identify the need and demand for new activities
  • Improving access to sport for young people, people with disabilities and those from disadvantaged communities
  • Support amateur community sports clubs
  • Organise national governing body qualification courses
  • Ensure resources are used and available funding accessed
  • Organise sport and physical activity events
  • Put local and national policies into practice
  • Identify opportunities for funding
  • Promoting, running, monitoring and evaluating projects
  • Attend meetings, seminars and conferences
  • Finding and training suitable staff, coaches and volunteers for projects
  • Manage resources and budgets

Assessment Methods

You may occasionally attend College for lessons and to complete any examination components of the apprenticeship, but most assessment takes place in the workplace by an experienced advisor. You will also be required to build a portfolio using an online programme.

Progression Options

Successful completion of this apprenticeship enables you to progress to a Foundation Degree in Sport or other degree level qualification in sports development or coaching.

This course has taught me a lot of useful skills like being organised to help prioritise my workload and meet deadlines and communicating effectively which is essential when coaching sports.
