Course Overview

This is for Assessors who do NOT assess in the workplace but do assess in other environments (e.g. classroom, workshop). Typically you should be carrying out assessment methods such as:

  • Oral and written question
  • Assignments
  • Projects
  • Case studies
  • Recognising prior learning

The NVQ is related directly to your job role and helps you to reflect on your performance at work and review your working practices. It provides a personal development opportunity and enhances efficiency within your organisation.

You must achieve 2 mandatory units:

  • Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding: the aim of this unit is to assess a learning and development practitioner’s performance in carrying out assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding outside of the work environment
  • Understand the principles and practices of assessment: the aim of this unit is to assess the learning and development practitioner’s knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of assessment

Our NVQs are fully supported through our online portfolio system (OneFile). Candidates have access to their portfolio on line in order to upload work, view progress to date (shown as a total percentage) and to contact their dedicated Assessor. The portfolio can be accessed at any time, e.g. at home or in the workplace which makes the submission of work much simpler.

It is expected that the qualification will take up to 18 months to achieve however, candidates work at their own pace so can achieve as quickly as they wish, taking into account contact with their Assessor.

Assessment Methods

  • A workshop will be arranged which trainee Assessor or IQAs undertaking these qualifications must attend
  • The workshop will last for approximately 4½ hours and attendance is essential
  • Prior to the workshop, trainees will be issued with a questionnaire which requires them to research specific information about the qualification they are assessing or quality assuring
  • Questionnaires must be fully completed and returned at least10 days prior to the workshop. Trainees who do not complete and return the questionnaire will be unable to attend
  • The questionnaire could take 2-3 hours to complete, depending on their existing level of knowledge
  • At the end of the workshop trainees will leave with an action plan detailing the evidence they need for the qualification. This will be for them to use whilst working within their own assessment team to gather evidence of assessing or carrying out IQA, with the support of their Mentor
  • Every trainee Assessor and IQA will need a Mentor. The Mentor should be a qualified and experienced person from within the team delivering the qualification the trainee is assessing
  • Meetings will be arranged with the trainee Assessor at six week intervals following the workshop to review progress
  • Once sufficient activity has taken place and appropriate evidence has been gathered the portfolio can be completed and competence and knowledge assessed against the standards. Certification will take place after the trainee’s portfolio is signed off

All candidates must be in appropriate Assessor role. Prior to enrolment, an Assessor will discuss your job role with you to ensure that it will afford you sufficient scope to provide all of the evidence required.
