Education and Training Level 4 - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

Please note this course is for those over the age of 19 only.

For people working in post 16 education and training such as colleges, private training providers or training within their own workplace. This course is for learners who:

  • Are working in further or adult education such as a college or private training provider
  • Are working business, industry or public services and have a teaching or training role

This course provides the learner with the opportunity to understand the background to current education practice as well as gaining all the skills they need to become a successful practitioner.

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is the equivalent replacement for the previous offer of Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS).

The course concentrates on establishing your skills as a trainer. The regular taught sessions, workplace support, training practice and focused self-evaluation all combine to help the leaners improve their training and professional practice. We will help learners to:

  • Recognise the key challenges as a practitioner in the Lifelong Learning Sector and how they relate to their own skills, understanding and capability
  • Recognise and act on their own development needs in Language, Literacy, Numeracy (LLN) and Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • Lead the planning of their own improvement as a reflective professional
  • Develop a professional approach to all key elements of their role in ways which will engage and inspire their trainees
  • Plan a variety of learning activities, sessions and programmes, and evaluate their effectiveness
  • Assess student learning and evaluate their own effectiveness as a practitioner
  • Use strategies, resources and methods for supporting learning with a diverse range of learners on an individual and group basis, and evaluate their effectiveness.

Topics Include:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships
  • Delivery, resources and assessment
  • Planning to meet the needs of learners
  • Teaching in a specialist area

The course will be delivered via classroom teaching sessions, small group seminars and one to one tutorials, with further one to one feedback provided during the session observations. Supporting materials will also be provided on the College’s Virtual Learning Environment. Learners will be assessed through a series of seminar presentations, case studies, reports and observed training sessions.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through a series of seminar presentations, case studies, reports and observed teaching sessions.

Progression Options

If learners are working in further and adult education or in business, industry or public services, and have a restricted teaching or training role, this course gives them the qualification they need. It provides them with the opportunity to understand the background to current education practice as well as gaining all the skills they need to become a successful practitioner. If they successfully achieve the Level 4 Certificate they can progress to the Level 5 Diploma by completing a bridging unit and undertaking a second year, the subject tutor will be able to discuss this further with you at interview.
