Course Overview

Please note this course is for those over the age of 19 only.

If you are a teacher or trainer working in further and adult education or in business, industry or public services, this course gives you the qualification you need. It provides you with the opportunity to understand the background to current education practice as well as gaining all the skills you need to become a successful teacher.

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is the equivalent replacement for the previous offer of Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).

Upon successful completion of the Education and Training Level 4 Certificate you will be given the opportunity to progress onto the Level 5 Diploma by completing a bridging unit and undertaking a second year, the subject tutor will be able to discuss this further with you at interview.

Year 2
This includes a greater emphasis on the wider context of teaching, and issues facing teachers, whilst maintaining focus on how this impacts on your teaching and its development, and leads to completion of the diploma.

You will:

  • Further develop and improve your own teaching and explore new and innovative approaches with your learners and your peers
  • Recognise, take account of and manage a wide range of influences which impact on your curriculum, colleagues and organisation
  • Undertake an extended personal learning project which expands the pedagogy and practice of your own specialist area
  • Plan and commence your own Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Locate your practice within the overall context of post compulsory education

  • Teaching, learning and assessment
  • Developing teaching, learning and assessment
  • Theories, principles and models
  • Wider professional practice and development
  • Action research
  • Continuing Personal and Professional Development
  • Teaching in a specialist area

The course will be delivered via classroom teaching sessions, small group seminars and one to one tutorials, with further one to one feedback provided during lesson observations. Supporting materials will also be provided on the College’s Virtual Learning Environment.

There will be a fee for progressing to the Level 5, part of which will be due when starting the bridging unit with the remainder payable at the start of year 2. Places on the course will be reserved following interview and receipt of payment.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through a series of seminar presentations, case studies, reports and observed teaching sessions.

Entry Requirements

Entry to the programme requires all of the following:

  • A post as a full-time, fractional or part-time teacher, trainer or tutor
    in the Lifelong Learning Sector which involves regular teaching for a minimum
    of 50 hours a year, and 100 hours teaching over the two years of the course.
    30 hours of this must be supported development of your specialist area in your

  • Access to regular mentor support in your specialist area

  • A qualification in your specialist area, normally at a minimum of Level 3
    or equivalent. (Special entry arrangements are available for those without
    such qualifications but with relevant evidence of industrial, commercial or
    professional experience)
