Course Overview

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 Award in Education and Training is an introductory teaching qualification. Achieving this Award will provide sufficient evidence that the learner has acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare, plan, deliver and evaluate basic teaching and learning sessions, in a variety of teaching or training contexts. This introductory, knowledge-based teaching qualification has no minimum teaching practice requirement. Therefore, it may be undertaken by individuals who are not in a teaching role. However, there is a minimum requirement to take part in micro–teaching.

It can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, including:

  • Individuals not currently teaching or training
  • Individuals currently teaching and training, including those who have just begun or are about to begin
  • Individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a qualification providing an introduction to teaching.

It gives learners the opportunity to:

  • develop knowledge related to teaching and learning
  • develop skills in teaching and learning
  • achieve a nationally-recognised Level 3 qualification
  • develop their own personal growth and engagement in teaching and learning

This qualification is a direct replacement for the Pearson Level 3/Level 4 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (2011).

  • Understanding the teaching role and responsibilities in education and training

Optional Units – a furthernine credits:

  • Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches
  • Understanding Assessment in Education and Training

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed via a series of written tasks throughout the duration of the course. These tasks include idividual and collaborative tasks directly related to your own context and will be submitted online via MS Teams. There will also be a practical assessment of your teaching via a micro-teach at the end of the course.

Teaching methods

Throughout the programme you will be asked to engage with online (remote and independent) learning using a variety resources on MS Teams. You will be in frequent contact with your tutor and your peers using online personal and collaborative communication techniques. You will need to attend induction (on campus), two online learning classes (live face to face on MS teams), and a practical session (on campus) to deliver your micro-teach and provide peer feedback.

Attendance Requirements From your start date you will be able to access online materials, roughly ten days later you will need to attend College for a three hour session and again at the end of your seven week course. Full course dates/times will be sent to you upon receipt of enrolment.
