Course Overview

This course is for individuals who have secured a position as an Apprentice in the heavy vehicle maintenance sector. You would service, inspect and repairs heavy vehicles, and the nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts, through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment.

Technicians today have to demonstrate expertise in the technical side of their role, have strong problem-solving skills and a good grasp of the theoretical and practical aspects of vehicles systems and associated ancillaries.

Depending on your age and circumstances some fees may apply for your employer, however these can be discussed on an individual basis. Your employer may be liable to pay for any resits should they be required.

Assessment Methods

You will be required to take an active part in reviewing your progress with the College and your employer, including annual evaluations in the form of professional discussions. The discussion will reflect on behaviours, past performances and achievements. At the end of the apprenticeship, you will be required to take and pass an assessment consisting of theory and practical examinations.

Progression Options

On successful completion of your apprenticeship you could progress onto IMI Accreditation, an Irtec large goods vehicle inspection course or study the Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Automotive Studies.

Entry Requirements

Individual employers will
set their own selection criteria. It is recommended that to optimise the chance
of selection, you must demonstrate an interest in how the HV industry operates
as well as the ability to work in an organised and methodical way to analyse and
solve problems. You should be able to demonstrate mechanical skills and the
ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Ideally should hold a
GCSE in English and Maths at grade C or 4. Maths and English will be worked on
as part of the Apprenticeship and each application will be looked at
