Course Overview

This qualification extends and fosters a deeper level of understanding and application. It is suited to individuals who:

  • have qualified at CIPD L3 or another other suitable qualification.
  • are aspiring to, or embarking on, a career in people management and have extensive business knowledge
  • are working in a people practice role and wish to contribute their knowledge and skills to help shape organisational value
  • are working towards or working in a people manager role.

CIPD membership gives you a badge of professionalism that is internationally recognised. It showcases your knowledge and impact within the people profession.

Individuals in this role will use their HR expertise to provide and lead the delivery of HR solutions to business challenges, together with tailored advice to the business in a number of HR areas, typically to mid-level and senior managers. You could be in a generalist role, where you provide support across a range of HR areas – likely to be the Core HR option; or a specialist role, where you focus on and have in depth expertise in a specific area of HR – likely to be Resourcing, Total Reward, Organisation Development, or HR Operations. Whichever of these is chosen, at the end of this apprenceship you will have a good grounding across the whole range of HR disciplines.

Units of study

During your apprenticeship you will complete a CIPD Level 5 Intermediate Certificate in Human Resource Management from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. While studying this qualification you will cover the main elements of the Core Knowledge of the apprenticeship:

  • HR Technical Expertise:
    Good understanding across all HR disciplines, HR legislation and an excellent working knowledge of the organisation’s HR policies and procedures.
  • Business Understanding:
    Understands what the organisation does, the external market and sector it operates in, its challenges and issues.
  • HR Function:
    Understands the structure and responsibilities of the HR function, policies and processes, and where to source HR specialist expertise.
  • MI and Technology:
    Understands HR systems and where to find HR and management data, both internally and externally, including benchmarking.

Skills

  • HR consultancy:
    Develops and delivers HR solutions to the business that are appropriate to the organisational context.
  • Providing support and advice:
    Tailors business-centred advice on the interpretation and application of HR policies and processes.
  • Contributing to business change:
    Leads the HR contribution to business projects and change programmes to support positive behavioural, business or organisational change.
  • Building HR capability:
    Leads the improvement of people capability within the business or own team.
  • HR information analysis:
    Researches, analyses and presents HR business data.
  • Personal development:
    Keeps up to date with business changes and HR legal, policy, process changes relevant to their role.
  • Relationship management:
    Builds effective working relationships.

Behaviours

    Adapts positively to changing work priorities and patterns, ensuring key business and HR deadlines continue to be met.
  • Resiliance:
    Displays tenacity and proactivity in the way they go about their role, dealing positively with setbacks when they occur.

This is a rolling programme with multiple entry points.The length of this apprenticeship should typically be 2-3 years, but could be closer to 18 months if the apprentice has previously completed the Level 3 apprenticeship.

Currently your 20% off the job will included attending blended learning teaching sessions and written assignment work in order to complete the L5 CIPD qualification.

For the remote teaching sessions please ensure you have a computer with microphone and it would be helpful if you have a video link.

Additional costs

  • CIPD student membership fees which will be required in order to complete the CIPD qualification. This will be directly paid for by the student to the CIPD and please check with the CIPD for their current costs.
  • Although not obligatory, a course textbook.

If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Please apply for a full-time course as your second option.

Assessment Methods

During the Apprenticeship you will complete a CIPD L5 qualification. This consists of blended learning of remote and face to face delivery at Taunton Campus with the option to remotely sign in if you are unable to attend. At all times you will have access to a suitably qualified and experienced tutor who will be able to support you in your learning. You will build an online portfolio evidencing the knowledge, skills and behaviours you have gained Throughout the apprenticeship. CIPD L5 qualification involves written assessments using business formats such as business reports and powerpoint presentation. The Apprenticeship involves an on-programme work-place assessment and knowledge support, finalising in an End Point Assessment, involving a consultative project and professional discussion.

Progression Options

Successful achievement of the CIPD Level 5 will allow progression onto the CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Strategic People Management or the CIPD Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Learning and Development. Please note that neither qualification is offered by BTC.

Entry Requirements

You can gain employment in any HR role within any organisation. As long as the job role gives you the opportunity to lead the delivery of HR solutions which will enable you to work towards the knowledge, skills and behaviours elements of the apprenticeship standard. Your Apprenticeship Recruitment Advisor will be able to support this.

If you have not already achieved GCSE grade A-C or 9-4 in English and maths (level 2), you will need to achieve Functional skills at level 2 prior to completion of your Apprenticeship.

Spotlight

I decided to do Level 2 Business which I thoroughly enjoyed which made me chose to develop my understanding of Business and so then I went on to do Level 3 in Business. I have gained confidence, knowledge and multiple skills throughout the course and It has helped me to understand what I want to do in the future.
