Course Overview

You need to be employed to start an Apprenticeship. Please visit our vacancy page or contact 01278 441234 if you have an employer. If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Please apply for a full-time course as your second option.

This apprenticeship is suitable for you if you wish to study while earning a salary in paid employment as a teaching assistant in a school or college, and are new to the childcare sector. It is a flexible programme, you will need to have the opportunity to be involved in planning learning activities in your workplace

You will coverthe following components:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Employment rights and responsibilities
  • Functional Skills Level 1 in English, maths and ICT
  • Personal learning and thinking skills

We haveexcellent relationships with schools in the area and provide a supportive learning environment at College. The teaching staff and assessors have recent, relevant workplace
experience and enjoy the opportunity to nurture new practitioners.

Assessment Methods

There are no written exams for the Certificate, instead you build a portfolio which includes coursework and practical assessments from your workplace. The work place assessment combines knowledge and practical skills. You may be required to sit exams for Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT if they do not already have these.

Progression Options

On successful completion of the Apprenticeship you could find permanent employment in early years settings or apply for the Advanced Apprenticeship Teaching Assistant.

Entry Requirements

You need GCSEs in the A* to E or a relevant Level 1 qualification. Entry is
subject to a successful interview and DBS, and you are expected to have employment in a
school of at least 30 hours a week for the duration of the course.

My ambition is to become a primary school teacher and make a difference to children’s lives. I’m keen to work with children who have additional needs, as I know the value of being supported and helped. After College I plan to study degree and then a PGCE course in order to become a qualified teacher.
