Equine Studies Horse Care Apprenticeship Level 2 - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

This course is suitable for anyone who is employed full-time in the horse industry and who wishes to study horse care in their work place rather than attending a full-time college course.

Whilst at work you will receive comprehensive practical training that will enable you to carry out the jobs required by your employer, and achieve a Level 2 Diploma in Work-Based Horse Care. You will be visited at the workplace by a Work Based Assessor, to check on your progress, and to ensure that you are building evidence towards your final qualification.

You will undertake a range of units that will enable you to work effectively and safely with horses, and some students may also be given the opportunity to complete ridden units.

To be successful, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units.

Examples of units may include:

  • Maintaining horse health
  • Stable management
  • Grassland management
  • Nutrition, health and safety
  • Ride a schooled horse
  • Ride on the road
  • Transportation and developing effective working relationships

As a Bridgwater & Taunton College apprentice, you will have the same range of support facilities available to you as full-time students, this includes:

  • Practical skills instruction from experienced and qualified practitioners
  • A lively and stimulating environment in which to make new friends to help you through your first year of work
  • Tutorial support and guidance as well as individual support from your Trainer/Assessor

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes written coursework, an online portfolio, expert witness statements provided by employer and a practical assessment in the workplace.

Progression Options

Having successfully completed this course, you can progress to the Level 3 qualification. Alternatively you may choose to continue to work within your current employment and use the knowledge you have gained to move into a supervisory position.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the A* to E or 9 to 2 range or other equivalent qualifications. Industry experience is required and full-time employment within an horse care sector is essential. You will be invited to attend an interview to assess your suitability for the course.
