Course Overview

This qualification leads to a career as a Sports Turf Operative. This varied career means you are responsible for the maintenance, renovation and overall appearance of one or more sports turf surfaces in accordance with the needs of the particular sport. It is their job to maintain an appropriate quality playing surface which reflects the carrying capacity of that surface to ensure that a sustainable playing surface is provided.

Subjects include:

  • Maintaining the health of sports turf
  • Presenting and repairing sports turf
  • Use and maintain equipment and machinery
  • Prepare and operate a tractor and attachments
  • Health and safety
  • Developing personal performance
  • Establishing plants outdoors

Assessment Methods

Your knowledge and skills will be continually assessed, working towards an end point assessment with the use of e-portfolio to compile your evidence. You will be appointed a Trainer Assessor to visit your workplace and support you through the programme as well as workshops days at the Cannington campus to cover the technical elements of the course and Functional Skills. When you are ready you will complete an end point assessment consisting of a multiple choice and written answer test and a practical assessment in the workplace.

Progression Options

On successful completion, you could progress to supervisory level employment within the industry or find employment as a grounds person or sales representative. Alternatively, you could continue your studies with a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for the Apprenticeship, but you need to

attend an interview and complete an English and maths initial assessment. If
do not have GCSE maths and English at grade 4 (C) you will work
towards a
functional skills qualification during your learning.

Once I complete my course, my dream is to work for The National Trust or travel and find employment in gardens abroad. The course has helped me see all the opportunities available to me, so I feel confident my future looks bright.
