Course Overview

You need to be employed to start an Apprenticeship. Please visit our vacancy page or contact 01278 441234 if you have an employer. If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Please apply for a full-time course as your second option.

This qualification provides the perfect opportunity to work in a wide range of environmental situations including football pitches, schools’ grounds, councils, golf courses and sports grounds.

Subject areas include:

  • Health, safety and security in the workplace
  • Estimating resource requirements
  • Managing resources
  • Set up/mark out landscape sites to establish grassed and planted areas
  • Evaluate ground and environmental conditions to establish grassed and planted areas
  • Prepare sites for soft landscape establishment
  • Establish grass swards
  • Plan the maintenance, repair and renovation of sports turf areas
  • Plan and set out sports areas
  • Maintain drainage and irrigation systems
  • Maintain equipment and machinery
  • Manage information for action

Assessment Methods

There are no exams but your knowledge and skills will be continually assessed. You will be appointed a Trainer Assessor to visit your workplace and support you, as well as regularly assessing your progress with the aid of Onefile e-portfolio.

Progression Options

On successful completion, you could progress to higher level employment within the industry or continue your studies by enrolling on the HNC in Horticulture at University Centre Somerset.
