Course Overview

Thissubject is ideal if you wish to learn how to take creative photographs that communicate ideas, tell a story and are aesthetically pleasing. Ideally you will have a keen interest in all aspects of photography from film photography to digital and social media photography. Students taking this subject have access to a professionally equipped studio and the use of bookable industry standard equipment, studios and a dark room to fully realise their creative potential. You could also join the Media Academy to work on live briefs with real clients.

The course involves a variety of practical, theoretical and historical perspectives relating to photography as art, communication and illustration.

Both analogue and digital photography are taught on this course.

Topics of study include:

  • Lenseless photography
  • Skills in exposure theory
  • Studio lighting
  • Medium/large format techniques
  • Composition
  • Processing and printing in the darkroom
  • Scanning and manipulating images in Photoshop on Apple Mac computers
  • Presentation techniques

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed via project work that will build into sketchbooks and a portfolio of images.

Progression Options

You will be able to persue a range of higher education opportunities, career paths or apprenticeships in media across a range of sectors. You can also remain at Bridgwater & Taunton College and study our FdA Media Production at University Centre Somerset.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the A* to C or 9 to 5 range, including
Maths and English. You must demonstrate a strong interest in photography via a
portfolio of photographs. Ownership of a digital camera with manual mode is
advantageous.
