Politics A Level - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

This subject explores the mechanisms that promote democracy in our country and the USA. It offers the theoretical framework behind the actions of government and promotes a deeper appreciation about what we read in the papers or watch on our screens. In particular, it examines the political systems in both the UK and USA and also the manner in which we engage with and participate in political action.

The course covers the following:

  • People and Politics: This is politics in action – how we interact with the system and the extent to which it is effective
  • Governing the UK: In this unit we look at the institutions of government in Britain – how they work in principle and in reality
  • Representative Processes in the USA: In this unit we look at democracy in action and how it has changed in recent years
  • Governing the USA: This unit looks at the organisation of the American system of government and considers how effective these institutions are in fulfilling the hopes of America’s founding fathers
