Course Overview

This course is designed to develop your skills and knowledge if you want to enter or progress into the agricultural industry.It will allow you to explore the different career pathways of livestock, mechanisation, crop production and farm business management, and includes practical and theory studies in areas such as crop sciences, farm livestock husbandry and land-based machinery.

This course not only provides you with practical skills, it also ensures you are able to deal with the managerial aspects of a successful role in the agricultural industry.

  • Professional working responsibilities
  • Plant and soil science
  • Contemporary issues in land-based sectors
  • 300 work experience hoursin land-based sectors
  • Estate skills
  • Land-based machinery operations
  • Managing environmental activities in agriculture
  • Managing activities for agricultural enterprises
  • Agricultural business improvements
  • Farm livestock husbandry
  • Grass and forage crop production
  • Sheep and dairy production
  • Land-based workshop practices
  • Selecting and managing land-based machinery

Other opportunities include:

  • Visits toindustry manufacturers and a range of agricultural shows such as LAMMA, The Dairy Show and Grassland UK Shows
  • Hands-on practical experience on the College farm
  • Opportunities to engage with a wide variety of employers.
  • Supervising other students on the farm in the second year of the course.
  • Learning a variety of employability skills whilst on a series of farm work experience at Rodway Farm
  • Taking part in a study tour

Please note there is a £210 fee for visits, trips and materials

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through assignments, written exams and practical assessments.

Progression Options

On completion, you could progress to the Foundation Degree in Agricultural Management to University Centre Somerset or find employment in a managerial role within the industry.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range including English and maths, or a Level 2 qualification in agriculture (or equivalent) at Merit grade with GCSE English and maths. Entry is also subject to a successful
interview.
