This course is ideal if you have a strong interest in art and design related areas and wish to study a broad-based course before specialising in a particular field.
The study of historical and contemporary artists, exploring ideas and visual communication form the basis of your study whatever your specialism. You will compile a portfolio of work to help provide access into higher education or employment. All students participate in exhibitions throughout the course, including an end of year exhibition. Students will also participate in visits to museums and galleries to inspire their practice. You also have access to trips and residentials, visiting speakers and professional facilities. Previous groups have visited New York, St Ives, London and European destinations. Work placements and work readiness take place throughout the course to ensure you are ready to progress your studies or enter the workplace.
Throughout the course you cover a broad range of skills and approaches to art and design, that may include:
You are continually assessed through practical and written assignments, a practical exam and external moderation. Your progress is monitored by tutorials and seminars.
On successful completion, you could start our Foundation Diploma in Art & Design pre degree programme or head straight to university to study a degree in subjects such as textiles, interior design, photography, architecture, game design, animation, illustration, graphic design, fine art, education, set design, media makeup, costume design or applied arts. Some of these options are available at our own University Centre Somerset. My animation skills have improved greatly since I have been learning at BTC. The College uses specialist software such as Adobe Animate and the equipment we use is the same that is used in industry. Alongside my course I am a member of the BTC Animation Academy where we do even more animation and enter competitions.
