If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Please apply for a full-time course as your second option.
This course is for those who have secured a position in the heavy vehicle maintenance sector. You would service, inspect and repairs heavy vehicles, and the nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts, through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment.
Technicians today have to demonstrate expertise in the technical side of their role, have strong problem-solving skills and a good grasp of the theoretical and practical aspects of vehicles systems and associated ancillaries.
Depending on your age and circumstances some fees may apply for your employer, however these can be discussed on an individual basis. Your employer may be liable to pay for any resits should they be required.
You will be required to take an active part in reviewing your progress with the College and your employer, including annual evaluations in the form of professional discussions. The discussion will reflect on behaviours, past performances and achievements.
At the end of the apprenticeship, you will be required to take and pass an assessment consisting of theory and practical examinations.
On successful completion of your apprenticeship you could progress onto IMI Accreditation, an Irtec large goods vehicle inspection course or study the Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Automotive Studies.

I’ve really enjoyed learning all about the internals of cars and what a car relies on to run smoothly. This benefits me in the workplace because I know how parts work when I come to repair or replace them. So far my greatest achievement has been passing the first year.
