Course Overview

The qualification is achieved by demonstrating that you are both practically and theoretically competent. This ensures a good all-round ability. Your practical evidence will be developed in the College’s fantastic workshops throughout the year and by working in a garage whilst on work experience. You will also be assessed via an online exam throughout the year which will count towards your final qualification. You will also be expected to complete work experience in a relevant placement.

You cover all foundation practical systems of the motor vehicle including:

  • Engines
  • Braking systems
  • Steering systems
  • Suspension systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Cooling systems

Learner will attend College for 2 full days a week and be expected to interact with our unique online learning experience as per your designated time tabled session.

A course fee is payable unpon enrolement to cover PPE, ie boots and overalls,and some course materials.

Assessment Methods

The qualification is achieved by demonstrating that you are both practically and theoretically competent. This ensures a good all-round ability. Your practical evidence will be developed in the Colleges fantastic workshops throughout the year and by working in a garage whilst on work experience. Your progress will be monitored by informal assessment throughout the year which will count towards your final Certification. You will also be expected to complete work experience in a relevant placement.

Progression Options

On successful completion you could progress to a Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair or an Apprenticeship (subject to an initial assessment and suitable employment in a garage). Alternatively you could find employment in the automotive industry.

Entry Requirements

GCSEs in the 3 to 1 range are desirable, or other equivalent qualifications
in a related subject but not essential. Learners will need to study Maths and
English if not already achieved Grade 4 or above.


A keen interest in the automotive industry is essential. You need a positive
attitude, as well as the enthusiasm to complete the programme and progress on to
the next level or employment.
