Course Overview

Preferably you will have an employer within the automotive sector where you will spend the vast majority of your time as an apprentice. However, support and guidance is available through our apprenticeship team if you are yet to find a placement.

This apprenticeship course is the ideal choice for you if you like to be actively involved through work and have a keen interest in modern motor vehicle coatings.

Topics studied include:

  • Preparing panels to accept foundation and topcoats
  • Preparing and applying foundation materials and topcoats to vehicles
  • Mixing and matching paint colours
  • Identifying and rectifying paint defects and faults
  • Health and safety
  • Skills for the automotive workplace

You will attend the Automotive Centre on a block release basis to study a VRQ Technical Certificate that provides the essential knowledge to do the job and Functional Skills to develop the literacy, numeracy and IT skills needed in the modern workplace. You will also undertake a VCQ at your workplace that involves building a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate that you can do your job to a nationally recognised standard. You will also undertake an ERR course about employment rights and responsibilities and PLTS (personal learning and thinking skills).

Assessment Methods

Your progress is continually monitored through assessments, observations, assignments and tests.

Progression Options

On successful completion of the course you will be a qualified professional Vehicle Body Refinisher. You could find employment or progress to study units towards an HNC.

I’ve really enjoyed learning all about the internals of cars and what a car relies on to run smoothly. This benefits me in the workplace because I know how parts work when I come to repair or replace them. So far my greatest achievement has been passing the first year.
