Course Overview

During this two-year course, you learn about the construction techniques and methods used to undertake construction projects.

The qualification will help you gain an understanding of the onsite industry and the sector. It also includes a mixture of classroom learning and on-the-job
experience during an industry placement of at least 45 days.

Topics may include:

  • Health and safety
  • Construction science principles
  • Sustainability in the construction industry.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through written and practical examinations, employer projects, group work, presentations and analysis.

Progression Options

This technical qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and skills needed for working in the onsite industry, which will prepare learners to enter the industry through employment or as an apprentice. On successful completion, you could find employment in a skilled construction occupation, study a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship or progress on to study a university level course at University Centre Somerset.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range including English and maths, and a keen interest in the topic. Entry is subject to a successful interview.

Spotlight

I was really interested in the College because it has a good selection of tools and machinery, great tutors and I liked the workshops. It also offers courses from Level 1 to 3 in furniture making and design, which meant I could start at Level 1 and build my skills, plus I study maths alongside my course.
