T Level Education & Early Years - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

This challenging and exciting course focuses on childcare and education from 0 to 19, including child development, psychology and behaviours. Topics include pedagogical approaches (teaching approaches), child development, attachment and behaviour, working with others, types of education provision, SEND, reflective practice, EAL, safeguarding, health and safety and wellbeing.

In your second year, you focus within the 0 to seven age range where you build your knowledge and skills alongside demonstrating your competence in an industry placement. The course will give you Early Years Educator (EYE) status which is required to work in early years settings.

The overall content is divided into themes including:

  • Exploring sector provision for education and childcare
  • Child development, behaviour and English as an additional language
  • Approaches to learning for positive outcomes in education for children and young people
  • Professional practice for education and childcare including safeguarding, health and safety and wellbeing of children and young people, equality and diversity, Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)
  • Working with others in education and childcare.

This qualification includes a mixture of classroom learning and on-the-job experience during an industry placement of a minimum of 750 hours across the two years. This amount of experience provides you with a licence to practise in early years education.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through written and practical examinations, employer projects, group work, presentations and analysis. You will be set targets to work towards and achieve in your mandatory work placement to help you develop the skills you need for the second year practical assessments.

Progression Options

Progression Opportunities: On successful completion, you could find employment in an early years setting such as a nursery or primary education. Alternatively, you could progress to study a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship, degree or higher-level technical qualification at the University Centre Somerset. Many students use the T level to begin their progress on to a teaching degree.

I didn’t know anyone when I started but quickly make new friendships and have gained in confidence. The work experience helped with that, as well as the staff being really supportive.
