Course Overview

This course is an exciting introduction to engineering where you will experience a wide range of engineering subjects. It will be suitable if you are interested in a career in welding and fabrication, product design, manufacturing and assembly, engineering maintenance.

This is a one year practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects, practical tasks and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to progress to a more advanced work-related qualification such as the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering or an Engineering Apprenticeship.

Units may include:

Engineering drawing and design

    • Electronics
    • Mathematics
    • The engineering world and products
    • Fabrication and welding
    • Engineering machining

    You will study a combination of practical and theory subjects, with half of your time spent in our specialist engineering workshops.

    Learners will be expected to wear the following mandatory PPE/RPE in the BTC workshops when carrying out welding activities:

    • TIG/MMA welding gloves
    • Leather apron
    • Head mounted welding screens
    • Air fed welding screens (Loaned and available on a first come first served basis)
    • Safety glasses
    • Ear plugs
    • Safety boots
    • Proban overalls
    • A P3 Respiratory protection which protects against welding fumes.

    PPE/RPE which is brought in by learners for use in our workshops will be checked to ensure it is suitable for welding related activities.

    Assessment Methods

    Your progress is assessed through a range of assignments and assessments. These are set and marked internally by College staff and then validated by an external moderator. You will also be expected to complete work experience in a relevant industry placement.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 3 range including maths, or a relevant Level 1 qualification with a Merit profile. Entry is also subject to a successful interview.
