Course Overview

You need to be employed to start an Apprenticeship. Please visit our vacancy page or contact 01278 441234 if you have an employer. If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Please apply for a full-time course as your second option.

This course is ideal if you have a passion for horses, are sympathetic and caring, good at communicating and work well as part of a team. During your studies you could work at a livery yard, riding school or training yards to gain the experience to become a Stable Groom, Stud Assistant or Riding Instructor.

To be successful, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units. The selection of optional units depends on your employer’s yard and your assessor.

Examples of units include:

  • Clean and maintain stables
  • Provide feed and water to horses
  • Carry out routine care, and monitor the health and wellbeing of horses
  • Restrain horses using specified methods
  • Care for horses after exercise

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes an online portfolio, expert witness statements provided by your employer and practical assessments in the workplace.

Progression Options

Having successfully completed this course, you can progress to the Level 3 qualification. Alternatively you may choose to continue to work within your current employment and use the knowledge you have gained to move into a supervisory position.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs including English language, maths and a science in the
9 to 4 (A* to C) range with grade 6 (B) in maths or science. Industry experience is required
and full-time employment within the horse care sector is essential. You will be
invited to attend an interview to assess your suitability for the
course.
