This is a two day taster taking place on Tuesday 30 June and Wednesday 1 July. You need to attend both days to develop the practical skills and knowledge in your chosen subject.
This event is an exciting way to learn about the course or career you're considering for your future, and is designed to provide you with a chance to gain an insight into a specific industry.
You will spend your time becoming more familiar with the subject of your choice, meeting staff, viewing our facilities, asking questions and experiencing the atmosphere at BTC as if you were one of our students!
Both days begin at 9.30am and finish at 2.30pm
This is an interesting and fun opportunity for you to gain an insight into the exciting automotive industry. You will spend your time in our superb workshop environments, working on our fleet of vehicles experiencing what it’s like to be an automotive engineer.
Your safety is important to us, so ideally we would like you to wear safety boots and overalls. If this is not possible, sturdy footwear and clothes that you don’t mind getting grubby will be acceptable.
BEAUTY & COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES
Come and experience the ‘world of beauty therapy’ in our professional salon environment. Under the guidance of a qualified beauty tutor, you can experience the pleasure of giving and receiving a number of treatments.
Treat your face to a cleanse, tone, mask and moisturise, then make your hands and feet look and feel amazing by learning to manicure and pedicure. Finish this off by discovering how to achieve the perfect nail polish application.
COMPUTING & DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
There are several facets of computing that are integral to a future career in the technology sector. During this taster you will gain an understanding of numerous areas in the computing world and the inspiration to join the industry.
You will be challenged to undertake mini projects in programming, website development and computer hardware. Throughout this experience you will learn a wide range of new skills essential in the computing industry today, with the support of our enthusiastic staff and fantastic resources.
Spend time in our workshop facilities completing practical activities and talking to our staff about the exciting opportunities waiting for you in construction. We will cover the following areas:
Please choose three creative arts subjects. You will take part in two subject (one each day), with your third choice as a back-up in case sessions are full.
Fashion – Footwear is an important part of fashion design and this ‘Pimp my Shoe’ workshop will teach you about branding, design and trends, finishing with an unusual catwalk show.
Textiles – Work on a professional client style project to develop creative thinking using colour, surface pattern, mark-making and materials to produce textiles for fashion garment or interior spaces.
Graphic Design – This ‘Importance of Branding’ workshop will develop your design skills to better communicate messages through colour, typography and graphic mark making and help influence a target audience.
Photography – You will work with digital and traditional photographic methods to explore what happens when ‘stuff gets in the way’. When taking photographs, scenes and the composition can often be disrupted by objects and people. You will create a concertina book to present your imagery to document this theme.
Fine Art: Drawing & Painting – Explore people, places and objects through the medium of drawing and painting, going beyond the obvious to create new and innovative techniques to improve your skills.
Fine Art: Sculpture and Installation – Combine a concept with innovative materials and techniques to produce medium to large scale installations, experimenting in groups to produce a mini exhibition of engaging fine art.
TV & Film Production – This video production taster will provide you with an introduction to the technical and creative skills required to shoot an effective music video.
Media Make-up – Explore the world of media make-up with a casualty-style cuts and bruises workshop which will leave you looking worse for wear.
This exciting experience will give you an introduction to the following areas:
Fabrication – you will gain experience in fabrication, and manufacture an item which you can take home.
Electronics – you will be introduced to the basic principles of electronics and circuit building, and have the opportunity to produce and take home an operating circuit to be integrated in a product.
Computer-aided Design – you will use some advanced modern CAD software to design 3D models of engineering components. Use your creative skills to bring your idea to life.
We are offering you the opportunity to spend two days experiencing some of the delights of becoming a hairdresser. Find out about creative and artistic hairdressing techniques under the guidance of a qualified hairdressing tutor.
Through a range of activities, including putting hair up and blow drying, learn how to create different styles for many occasions in our professional hair salon.
HEALTH & EARLY YEARS
There is much more to the health and social care sector than just doctors and nurses. This taster session will explore what the sector is really all about and the sorts of careers you could progress onto after College. You will also explore the skills and values needed for a successful career, as well as take part in some fun activities to build your knowledge and skills.
This taster session will also give you an insight into the skills and knowledge needed to work within the early years sector, and help you decide whether this is the career for you. You will explore areas such as child development, as well as take part in practical activities such as creative and imaginary play. You will also learn about the careers that you can access with an early years qualification and what it can offer for your future.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB)
The IB taster will be a fun and academically challenging experience, giving you an insight into some of the subjects studied, and skills required to succeed on this world renowned course. Relating to each element of the IB programme, and ensuring a internationally minded approach, the two days will be themed on solving a current global issue. Success will require both independent and team-based participation. Challenges will develop skills in the following:

UNIFORMED PROTECTIVE SERVICES
Thinking about a career in the Uniformed Protective Services like the Police, Fire and Rescue Services, Armed Forces or Royal Marines? Come and join us on this action packed, practical taster to find out more about these exciting careers and how BTC can set you on the right path.
This practical and theory-based taster covers some of the fitness requirements for the main services and practical leadership, teamwork and communication tasks will test and develop these qualities by applying them in a practical environment. There will also be classroom-based exercises to build your confidence and problem solving skills.
SPORTS SCIENCE & COACHING
Throughout the two days you will be introduced to a variety of aspects within the sports science, health and fitness industries. You will act as a both an instructor and a client by undertaking a variety of practical tests in our gym and Fitness Lab. Analyse the data to assess if you need to improve according to national data, or if you are already Olympic athlete standard.
In addition, join us in a fun mix of practical sports activities, team games, challenges and problem solving tasks, and gain an insight into the skills and qualities needed to succeed in this energetic career.
