Horticulture students create a Seasonal Jubilee Celebration in The Walled Garden of Cannington.    - Bridgwater & Taunton College

The RHS Level 2 Practical Horticulture students are near to completing their course, but they are leaving a Seasonal Jubilee celebration legacy in The Walled Garden of Cannington.

The students were tasked with creating a summer bedding display for the Queen’s Jubilee, it was planted outside the glasshouse by two groups of students on the Horticulture course. The plants were themed to create a carpet of bedding in patriotic patterns that feature the colours of the Union Jack – red, white, and blue colours. Plants used include many annual bedding plants such as antirrhinum, salvia and lobelia. The students regularly use the Walled Gardens for their practical tasks, and to develop their plant identification skills.

They have also helped to re-develop an area which leads to the glasshouses, planting a new rose border underplanted with lavender to create a floral and scented avenue.  The additions of these new plants will allow future students more opportunities in plant care, propagation and pruning techniques.

Horticulture lecturer Emma Butler said,

It’s always tricky when placing bedding plans into a design, especially when not yet in flower, ensuring that the colour and designs are correct. The students worked really well as a team to ensure that this was the case and now that the border is in full flower, the careful positioning and care taken is rewarding to all visitors.
