Strengthening links between Bridgwater College and local schools - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Over the last few months, students from Haygrove School and Bridgwater College Academy Primary School have joined forces with CYQ Level 3 Personal Training and CYQ Level 2 Fitness Instructing students from Bridgwater College.

The CYQ Level 3 students designed a body conditioning programme, incorporating cardiovascular, resistance and body weight training for year 10 and 11 students from Haygrove School, Bridgwater, which gave the group the opportunity to use some of the excellent gym facilities that the College has to offer.

Ross McColgan, Chris Hunter, Sam Dearsley, Ethan Longhurst, Eric Evans, Max Greenhalgh, Kameron Lovell, Stefan Griffiths, Scott Sparkes, Jack Criddle, Harry Goddard, Gareth Coombes, Ashley Healey, Joe Clarke.

The CYQ Level 2 students delivered a timetable of physical activity and health related exercise sessions to pupils between the age of five and nine, at Bridgwater College Academy. The fun multi-skills sessions aimed to develop key communication skills for everyone involved as well as giving the College students an opportunity to experience working with a different clientele who they may not have considered previously.

Dominic Hodges, Associate Lecturer in Sports and Services at Bridgwater College, said,

“These types of opportunity are a fantastic way for our students to gain experience of working with different individuals and pushing them out of their comfort zone. It was also a great chance for local schools to see the College and get familiar with the facilities that will be available to them when they leave school.”

Eric Evans, a pupil from Haygrove School in Bridgwater said,

“I have really enjoyed our time at Bridgwater College. It was fantastic to receive individual training from the College students who acted as our own Personal Trainers. I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to find out more about the College in general as well as the specific courses that I’m interested in.”

Jim Gillard, teacher at Bridgwater College Academy said,

“The children have really enjoyed the activities. The College students have planned a very interesting and exciting programme for the children to enjoy; the teachers have liked the sessions too!”

Luke Brewer, CYQ Level 2 student at Bridgwater College said,

“My experience at Bridgwater College Academy has given me a great insight into teaching and leading sessions in a different environment. It has helped me improve my communication skills and take more of a leadership role. I have really enjoyed it!”
