The Power of Apprenticeships: Facilities Manager goes from managing team of 5 to a team of 86 staff! Here is how: - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Bridgwater and Taunton College (BTC) Facilities Manager, Mark Ateyo, shares his story of success following his Apprenticeship with BTC.

As an existing member of staff at BTC, Mark was aware of the broad range of courses available. Keen to progress in his chosen field of Facilities Management, Mark chose to enrol on the L3 Team leader/ Supervisor Apprenticeship. With no other formal qualifications, he chose a BTC apprenticeship as the place to start. With the support from his line managers, Mark was able to complete the course as part of his existing daily role.

The road to completing his apprenticeship was not without its struggles, the Covid pandemic struck and like most at this time, learning transitioned to online. Mark said;

This terrified me…However I am pleased to say that the transition to online learning helped me in the long run.. This built my confidence and has no doubt contributed to the outcome I gained

Mark was able to overcome his fears and was awarded with a Distinction for his Apprenticeship, something he did not envisage when he started, he named this his “Greatest academic achievement so far”

Mark added;

I was very lucky to have a supportive management structure and colleagues around me that provided the opportunities and support I needed to successfully complete course. With BTC as my employer I was fortunate enough to have a very wide range of resources I could call on that helped along the way

Mark went on to explain how the Apprenticeship prepared him for his next steps;

Not only did my Apprenticeship re affirm the skills I already possessed, but fine-tuned them to help me become a better supervisor. The availability of staff to discuss topics with, ask questions and bounce ideas off of was invaluable

Unsurprisingly, Mark was successful in being awarded a promotion after gaining his new qualification. Incredibly, he has progressed from managing a team of 5, to managing a wide provision totalling 86 staff across four disciplines and multiple campuses.

Mark is now considering completing a Level 5 apprenticeship to support his potential progression into a more senior role, something he wouldn’t have dreamt of five years ago.

Mark’s story is a wonderful, yet not uncommon, example of how an Apprenticeship can support you in progressing in your current role.

Are you considering an Apprenticeship with BTC? This is what Mark had to say:

Do it, you won’t regret it! The teaching support is second to none, it is also useful meeting other learners from different organisations and learning from each other.
