Katie, an Electrical Nuclear Technician Apprentice at Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS), has been named ‘The British Army Higher Apprentice of the Year for the South West region’ at the Department for Education’s National Apprenticeship and Skills Awards.
This prestigious award celebrates outstanding apprentices who have gone above and beyond during their training. Katie’s achievement is even more remarkable as she was previously one of our fulltime study programme students before joining NRS, showcasing a fantastic progression from education into a highly skilled career.
Having studied the Level 5 Electrical Nuclear Technician Apprenticeship at Hinkley Point A, Katie has now progressed onto the BENG Degree in Nuclear Engineering at University Centre Somerset in the National College for Nuclear.
Katie has gained extensive experience working with multiple teams on site during the decommissioning stage – a unique and challenging environment. Her role involves supporting maintenance engineers and contributing to critical operations that ensure safety and efficiency.
Katie is also a passionate STEM ambassador, visiting schools to inspire the next generation and promote careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths. She highlights the importance of the nuclear industry and encourages young people to explore opportunities in this vital sector.
The National Apprenticeship and Skills Awards, now in its 22nd year, received over 1,100 entries from across industries including construction, health, IT, science, and digital. Each regional winner represents the very best of apprenticeship talent in the UK. Katie will now compete in the National Finals in London at the end of November, going head-to-head with seven other regional winners for the coveted national title. Fingers crossed she brings home the win!
