Anything to Declare? Journey Through Time with the Reading Passport - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Have you got your passport? You’ll need it if we’re going to travel in time! Now you’re probably thinking ‘how can reading transport me through time?’ Well books have been written over hundreds of years so every book is a little snapshot of that time period.

Here at Bridgwater & Taunton College the Bridgwater and Cannington Centre LRCs are running, in conjunction with South West Regional Library Service a reading passport. This is a small booklet available from the counter at the LRC, which covers a century of literature from 1920 to 2020 (yes we’re even going to the future!).

Read a book from each decade and every time you complete a book and return it to the LRC you will get a stamp in your reading passport. If you are unfamiliar with authors and books from the decade don’t worry as the reading passport will guide you with suggestions of authors, such as George Orwell and Agatha Christie from the 1940s or Helen Fielding and Irvine Welsh for the 1990s.

For some more examples have a look at our display with literary gems such as Mrs Dalloway by Virgina Wolfe from the 1920s and a classic 1930s book Gone with the Wind by Maragret Mitchel; traveling closer to the present day we cover the 1970s and Dispatches by Michael Herr, and the 2000s with Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. Get 6 stamps and you could win a Love2shop voucher, while completing the passport will give you the chance to win a suitcase full of books.

So, what are you waiting for?
