NCfN Southern Hub’s partnerships with the industry multinationals have resulted in significant investment in this state-of-the-art nuclear training facility which includes a virtual reality environment, a reactor simulator, computer-equipped training rooms, recreation and collaboration space, as well as sports facilities and accommodation.
NCfN uses an innovative combination of physical, augmented and virtual reality to recreate a ‘live’ nuclear installation within its walls, enabling students and apprentices to experience the ‘inside’ of a nuclear power plant and experiment with different outcomes as part of their learning, in ways that could not be countenanced in a live installation.
Beating stiff competition from Jaguar Land Rover and Toyota Manufacturing, NCfN Southern Hub is winner of the 2019 Semta Skills Innovation of the Year Award for its virtual reality simulation facility, which was developed with grant funding from the Edge Foundation and Ufi Charitable Trust and financial support from Framatome. The Skills Innovation of the Year category examines the ways in which organisations have harnessed the latest technology to improve their delivery of skills training, and the positive impact this has had on the workforce.
Andy Berry, Principal of Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) says: “New technology has an important role to play in training the nuclear workforce of tomorrow. Virtual reality enables students to experience and learn from a range of different scenarios, honing their skills and required behaviours in a safe environment, which would not be possible in a live installation.”
